I might have a few. I'm just saying. My life growing up was full of dad-isms. (It was also full of "alternative" words to Christmas songs and nursery rhymes but that's a subject for another day!) Dad-isms were things that he said that sometimes made great sense and other times made no sense until I was much older and able to understand the "whys" of them. One of his dad-isms was "I don't doubt your ability, I question your commitment to get the job done". I call it an encouraging rebuke. (ha!) On the one hand, he was truly affirming his belief in my ability and talent. On the other hand, he was correctly acknowledging that I was a bit deficient in my follow through. He was totally right. And it pains me to say that he still is on a lot of subjects. A bunch of my girlfriends and I thought that we'd do Ali's One Little Word class- thinking that if we did it together it would be more fun and more likely that we'd actually DO the class. (see, my dad was right!) And so it began. My journey to find ONE word to summarize my hopes and dreams for 2011. Seemed like ONE word was just not enough. I though about LONG-ARM since I really need to focus on my commitment to learning my machine and getting good at working with it. I honestly believe I CAN do it I just need to COMMIT to doing it. Then I thought about the word HOME- after all so many things I'd like to accomplish this coming year are "home" based projects and Lord knows I've gone on and on about how I need to spend more time here and blah blah blah (we won't re-hash this one for you right now) I also considered MASTER- not as in "master of the universe" or "master of disguise" (that was a great movie by the way! HA!) but master as in become proficient or really good at something. But the more I analyzed what all the things I wished for had in common, my dad's words came to me like a gentle (yet firm) reminder of what the common issue was with my lack of mastery of so many of these things- I need to COMMIT.
I looked up the word COMMIT at Thesaurus.com and here's what it said:
|Part of Speech:||verb|
|Definition:||perform an action|
|Synonyms:||accomplish, achieve, act, carry out, complete, contravene, do, effectuate, enact, execute, go for broke, go in for, go out for|
If I was Stephanie, I'd have it all drawn out and pretty for you (wonder if I can talk her into making me one of those pieces with my word...hmmmmm?!?!?!?) but since I don't... pretend. Will you? :) Thanks.
So anyway, here's my word in black and white and somewhat of a declaration to work on my commitment issues in 2011. I want to get down the road a year from now and see a list of things that I've accomplished and mastered as a result of working on the COMMIT part of the equation.
Thanks SO SO SO much for popping by and being a part of my world. I can't wait to share lots of baby Sutton photos and crafty projects and home ideas and just general thoughts with you next year. I really appreciate you stopping by. Sincerely, I do. HaPpY NeW YeAr to you and yours and may all your dreams find you with the resolve and commitment to make them happen. :)
p.s. the photo? :) A quick iPhone shot in the basement. I already started on my commit-ment issues and spent a few hours in the basement organizing and pretty-ing up things so that it's more pleasant to be down there. YAY! The pictures are just there for a bit till Chase gets his apartment and then they'll go to his new place. All I need is a heater down there so I don't freeze to death and I should be good to go. :)
